VIDEO SITTINGS
Through the cold, shiny screens of the devices we are so attached to, reality is morphed into an aggressive cheeriness as users look to bump up their ratings and reputation and where “sameness” gets rid of emotional and physical pain and eradicates individualism and free will.Video Sittings is a performance video-art work series by Suzana Phialas. It was created as part of the artistic research project “T:me B” within the framework of the residency “Moving The New” at Dance House Lemesos in 2019. It is especially designed to be set-up as either a life-size video Installation in a gallery set-up or as live video art on the web.The videos are shot in a specific vertical format relating to the “selfie”. The performers struggle with the notion of self-image competition on social media. The goal is one: to keep practicing their posing to create their best digital image in order to bump up their ratings and reputation. Their digital reality is morphed into a grotesque cheeriness but at the end leaves them in an emptiness and un-satisfaction in their material life once they return to “reality”.The use of the bodybuilding poses in the choreography is set to accentuate the meaning of competition and give a funny and ironic reading. The music plays another big role in the work as it is used to affect the viewer’s emotions such as sadness and also a burlesque, joker-like view of the performers.
